What is Majorica?
Majorica can refer to several things. It is the name of a company that designs and creates exquisite jewellery with the world's only handcrafted organic pearls. The company has been in operation since 1890. Majorica is also a term used to refer to Majolica, a type of pottery in which an earthenware clay body is covered with an opaque white glaze, then painted with stains or glazes and fired. Lastly, Majorica could be a misspelling of Majorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, located in the western Mediterranean Sea. Majorca is known for its beautiful coastline and is a popular holiday destination.
Tell me more about Majorica's history.
Majorca, also known as Mallorca, is the largest island of the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain, and the seventh largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. The name derives from Classical Latin insula maior, "larger island". Later, in Medieval Latin, this became Maiorca, "the larger one", in comparison to Menorca, "the smaller one".
The formation of the Baleares islands is assumed to have taken place around 150 million years ago. At first, Majorca was joined to the peninsula as an underwater island. One hundred and forty-nine million years later, more or less, its present configuration came into being.
Archeological evidence indicates the presence of the porc negre (black pig) in pre-Roman settlements. The Balearic Islands were first colonised by humans during the 3rd millennium BC, around 2500–2300 BC from the Iberian Peninsula or southern France, by people associated with the Bell Beaker culture. The island's prehistoric settlements are called talaiots or talayots.
Majorca became a part of the Spanish province of Baleares in 1716 by the Decretos de Nueva Planta. Since the 1950s, tourism has transformed Majorca Island into a popular destination for visitors. In the 21st century, urban redevelopment attracted workers from Europe, Africa and South America. Today you can still see the remains of pre-historic settlements, medieval churches and fortresses, and of course the modern times.
